Potentially. FarmLink is simply a service that can inform you of farmland that is available to buy or lease. FarmLink lists properties of all sizes all across the state. Some properties come with a very reasonable price, while other properties are beyond the budget of many people seeking farmland. MFT has no control over the price of any of these properties (except for a few properties that MFT might own and be selling). Prices are set by the landowners.
As a Seeker, you will receive a password enabling you to search FarmLink’s database of properties. MFT will at times contact you directly to potentially fit your needs.
Step 1 is for you to contact us, where we can talk about the opportunity in more detail. Where it makes sense, we will then contact the farmland owner. If the owner is interested, we will then put the two of you in touch with each other. From there, all negotiations are between to you and the owner.
To enroll you must complete an application that gets into some detail about what kind of farm you are looking for (size, location, intended use, etc.). The application also contains questions about your previous farm experience, which may be important to owners of farmland you are interested in.
We advise people to only enroll as a Seeker if they are serious about farming. We require three years of farming experience.
There is no cost to enroll in the Maine FarmLink program; however, to help ensure the future of the program we encourage seekers to become members of Maine Farmland Trust. The standard individual membership cost is $30/year.
